| Public Safety Overview |
Information and training is a critical part of the public safety. Information regarding hazards and protective measures should be provided to workers through written documents and material safety data sheets. Through effective information and training, workers should learn to read and understand such information, determine how it can be obtained and used in their own workplaces, and understand the risks of exposure to the hazards in their workplaces as well as the ways to protect themselves. A properly conducted training program will ensure comprehension and understanding. It is not sufficient to either just simply hand them material to read.

You want to create a climate where workers feel free to ask questions. This will help you to ensure that the information is understood. You must always remember that the underlying purpose of the public safety training is to reduce injury to employees and the public. This will be accomplished by modifying behavior through the provision of hazard information and information about protective measures. If your program works, you and your workers will better understand hazards within the workplace. Furthermore, your workers' comprehension will also be increased, and proper work practices will be followed in your workplace.

Child Care
The daily life of preschool children in the United States has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. Because mothers of young children are far more likely to work than at any other time in the past, mother and child now spend much less time at home. Research indicates that two-thirds of all jobs created in the 1990s were filled by women, three-quarters of whom are likely to become pregnant during their working lives. More than half of all new mothers now return to their jobs before their child's first birthday. Furthermore, two-thirds of women with pre-schoolers and over three-quarters of those with school-age children are expected to be in the labor force by 2010. Also, far more relatives--particularly women-also are employed, and have less time to spend with nephews, nieces, young cousins, and grandchildren.
For these and other reasons, young children are more likely to attend day care centers. During the 2 decades, employment in private-sector day care centers increased by more than 250 percent, gaining nearly 400,000 jobs and continuing to grow during two of the four recessions in the period.
