About Us
American Financial Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping people realize financial independence. The organization was founded in 2002 by Karl G. Lawrence, PhD, CFP®, who wanted to provide financial literacy education to families within his community.
Through his initial work in the community, Dr. Lawrence became increasingly concerned about the growing need for financial knowledge by individuals with disabilities and decided to make this market an area of emphasis for the organization. American Financial Institute’s philosophy for addressing financial independence involves the integration of education, employment, and empowerment.
Education. We believe that education and training is a cornerstone of financial independence, because it enables individuals to respond to opportunities, to challenge their traditional perceptions and to change their lives.
Employment. Through contracts with the Social Security Administration and the Vocational Rehabilitation Division of Florida Department of Education we are able to assist individuals with disabilities to find suitable employment. We promote the principle that disability is not a barrier to the fulfillment of hopes or dreams. Rather, it is a condition that must be confronted.
Empowerment. Powered by innovative public and private partnerships, American Financial Institute provides financial educational materials and modules designed specifically for the disabled community. We believe that a working knowledge of basic money matters is an inalienable right and a requirement for financial empowerment.
